The police boss said his officers have identified unregistered guest houses which are being used by human trafficking agents to accommodate foreigners. According to a police officer who declined to be named because he is not authorised to speak to the media, the current influx of illegal immigrants is a result of the increasing number of porous routes at Kiunga in Lamu and Vanga in Msambweni. He said the immigrants have taken advantage of the illegal routes to sneak into the country without being registered by immigration officers at the border points. “Human trafficking is on the increase because of porous border points and they take advantage of the laxity of police at the borders to sneak into the country. Even drug traffickers use the same routes to supply drugs,” said the officer.
I find it interesting how so often immigration, and human trafficking get lumped together as one issue. While one impacts another obviously, I wish more attention was paid to the trafficking component, and less to the ‘border crossing’ or ‘porous boundaries’. I don’t see that as the problem- more the demand for this sort of oppressive trade- the power involved, and how these networks get set up in the first place. A recent news story which involved human trafficking and ‘The Jungle’ refugee in France pointed to a lot of immigration issues as well. Illegal immigration is linked to human trafficking in the sense that smugglers also can turn out to be traffickers. Here in the U.S. there have numerous cases where people crossing the Mexican border were duped by their smugglers and sold into slavery. I would say that illegal immigration has the same relationship to human trafficking that porn does. One does not equal the other but there’s overlap.
